SIDS (not): Virginia: Brandi Casey Pleads Guilty to Child Abuse Charges

RICHLANDS, Va. -- A Tazewell County woman has pleaded guilty to several charges in federal court.
Brandi Nicole Casey, 27, of Grove Street, Richlands, Va., pleaded guilty on May 25, 2011, in the Tazewell County Circuit Court to charges of Felony Child Abuse, Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession of a Schedule III Controlled Substance and Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance. The Court accepted her plea and set her case for sentencing on July 14, 2011.
During the guilty plea hearing it was revealed that on the night of Jan. 6, 2010, Casey ingested several narcotic medications before going to bed with her infant child.
During the night the child passed away from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome while co-sleeping as determined by a subsequent autopsy. Casey initially lied to Investigators of the Richlands Police Department and the Department of Social Services denying that she had taken illegal narcotics or was intoxicated on the night of the death. Casey was originally charged with a count of Felony Homicide which was dismissed upon a guilty plea to the four other counts. At sentencing, Casey faces a maximum possible sentence of 21 years.
"This is one of the saddest cases I have ever seen," said Tazewell County Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Lee. "It is the Commonwealth's belief that the defendant was so intoxicated from illegal drugs that she either accidently smothered her child in her sleep or was unable to realize the baby was in distress. This case illustrates both the wide variety of dangers of drug abuse as well as co-sleeping with infants."
Casey accepted full responsibility and has been incarcerated since her indictment in March, 2011.
The case was investigated by the Richlands Police Department and the Tazewell County Department of Social Services.
