Natalynn Hamrick died Feb. 3, almost a week after her mother, 23-year-old Carliece Hamrick, told police she shook her while trying to get her into a car seat while in a parking lot on Cunningham Drive on Jan. 29, according to court documents.
Donna Price, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, declined to label Natalynn's injury as Shaken Baby Syndrome, saying she couldn't elaborate beyond giving the cause and manner of death.
Shaken Baby Syndrome is described as a brain injury that occurs as a result of vigorously shaking a baby. Babies under the age of 1 are at the greatest risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"It's not just the usual fall off the change table and landing on the floor," according to Dr. William McAllister, a neurosurgeon at Riverside Regional Medical Center. "It's usually repeated violent shaking back and forth."
Police received a report about the child's condition after her babysitter called to tell them that the infant was unresponsive on Jan. 29. Police say the call came more than three hours after the shaking incident. According to an affidavit for search warrant, a mark was found on the back of one of Natalynn's legs. The mark "appears to have been created by a heated cylindrical object being pressed against the child's skin," according to the affidavit.
Hamrick is charged with murder and felony child abuse. She is being held without bond at Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Her next court appearance is April 1 in the Hampton Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
