SIDS: Kansas: Police investigating infant's death

John Green

The child-care provider found the child in a crib not breathing Nov. 18, according to a press release from Lyons Police Sgt. Russ Hammer. The baby was rushed to Rice County Hospital and then airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Doctors removed life support Nov. 25, according to the release.
Officials would not release the name of the child or details on the day care provider.
"The county attorney instructed us not to release anything else about the circumstances," Detmer said.
An autopsy has been completed, but an autopsy report has not be been filed, Detmer said. Funeral services are still pending, though they're expected later this week, he said.
The local health department is also investigating the death "to determine compliance with child-care regulations," said Katie Patterson-Ingels, public information officer with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "The investigation is ongoing and no additional information is known at this time.
It's possible the death of a 4-month-old found unresponsive in a crib at a Lyons' day care was due to "sudden infant death syndrome," according to the Lyons police chief.
"The possibility of that is pretty good," said Chief Chris Detmer. "On a child's death, we're required to do an investigation and if it turns out to be something worse, we'll go on."
